I just cannot fathom, people, in this day and age, at university level, Muslims, could actually believe in horoscopes. Even if it were not for religious concerns, I think it would be plai dumb to believe that the alignment of stars can affect your life, character etc.
Well, of course why I'm writing this is because I've just had enough of people who even mention zodiac signs to me, let alone believe in them. When will these people realize, it is all a scam!
What is Islam's take on this? Well amongst my readers there are some experts, and I'm definitely not one, but allow me to share a hadith I came across.
Rasulullaah s.a.w said: The purpose of stars are 3: 1) To decorate the heavens (i.e skies). 2)To be used as missiles to strike devils. 3) As a source of direction for travellers. Anyone who tries to find a purpose other than these 3, is doing something in vain. -aukama Qal. (Do correct me if the last line of the hadith isn't accurate)
When I told someone this hadith recently, that person still had the cheek to tell me,"Ah, Nabi saw only said it would be in vain, he didn't say it's wrong!" Haiz.
Some people say they don't believe in horoscopes whole-heartedly: so do they believe in it half heartedly? Or 20%? Or even 5%? Does that mean you attribute 5% of your fate to the alignment of the stars?
People, our lifestyles are already so damn un-Islamic. At the very least, DON'T let our beliefs, our Aqidah, become un-Islamic.

haha... interesting post. aku rasa kan, org percayakan horoscope sebab tu perkara tu terjadi.
so it is not predicting but rather influencing. for example: Libra, you will find your love this week. Haha... it has the psychological effect(if he believe in it) on the person to actually go look for love this very week. not that love will come to him gitu saja.
ataupun kalau bukan influence it is coincident. sekiranya, Libra, you are unlucky this week. then this bugger will think of all the unlucky stuff that might happen this week and say "wah , betul ah... minggu ni aku suay". padahal kalau dia tak percaya pada ni horoscope he will not think of the suayness in the first place.

Fiz, of course if it happens it is coincidental lah. About the influencing part ( i think u're trying to say it is the effect, not the cause), i don't know of people who would actually purposefully go out and do what is predicted in their horoscopes, like the example you gave. Maybe there are such people lah, but then they would have to be very dumb people.
Actually why people believe in horoscopes is irrelevant; what matters is people SHOULD NOT believe in horoscopes!
Eh tak malu...ahli mesyuarakat tingkap kena piat telinga ;-) Haha, I can't recall which ustaz/ustazah tell me we are not even allowed to read zodiac write-ups e.g. in the papers coz somehow we intend to believe it in the event it happens. Hehe, obviously I didn't listen to that...I love to read and then make fun of it. How can a professional or uni grad believe such things? tentang horoscopes nie, welllllllllllll, i think wat norhafiz kata tu betul ah.
i mean, from his examples, those who read horoscopes, they tend to go the extra effort to TRY to make whatever was said happen.
Be it finding love ke, (e.g. ada orang kenyit mata kat dia, dia ingat, eh betul lah! padahal kenyit pasal masuk abok), to dapat suay banyak2 ke (e.g. potong sayur, asik2 fikir, jgn kena jari jgn kena jari, terus aper lagi, mind controls movement punyer pasal, kenalah jari tu.)
i think i read somewhere too, i forgot where they said that, magazines or whatever media you read, they are very vague in their descriptions, and usually tend to repeat themselves.
Mcm for e.g. lah, they say you might come across a certain childhood friend this week. terus terserempak say, kindergarten fren and you start thinking, eh, betul ah! PADAHAL singapore mcm besar giler aper.
well, just my opinion ah. For me, i do read horoscopes. but to the extent of believing, nope i don't. i usually tend to compare the horoscopes from previous issues of magazines that i have and see the similarities and say,alah, diorang pernah print lah nie...
